Microsoft Is Cracking Down Software Piracy In The Philippines
Last 2005 was the most excruciating time for internet cafes as they become the target of the piracy crack down of BSA (Business Alliance Software) in the Philippines. Last week my company received a letter (photocopied and poorly prepared brochure) from Optical Media Board, Philippine National Police and National Bureau of Investigation.
I suspected that they are sending this to thousands of companies and hence they are photocopied. Who would be able to sign (manually) on these letters? Stipulated on the said letter was the Republic Act 8293 – Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines. Penalties are also imprinted on them (vividly) and the so generous word ‘Thank you for your attention’ on the last portion.
Now, we are in the verge of purchasing almost half million worth of software licenses to comply with this snail mail. If not, like everybody else’s business raided by the authorities, we will also be experiencing like those unfortunate ones.
Piracy is piracy and we are not condoning it. I am glad that my company is doing its best to comply with them. Have you received this letter? Or perhaps received a call from Microsoft Agents? Then perhaps, now is the time to find a good software reseller or switch to the forever free Linux System.
