Prove Yourself a Great Employee with these Tips

You may be competently doing your job but are you doing enough to get noticed? The whole point of your job is to do it well in the hopes that you earn bonuses and even promotions. There are a number of things you can do to ensure that you are viewed as a great employee. Keeping your presence in the mind of others is what it takes to snag those bonuses and other kudos. Here are just a few tips:

1. Display a great work ethic – Get to work a little early and stay a little later occasionally. You don’t necessarily have to do this all the time but showing that you are dedicated in getting the job done is important to supervisors.

2. Communicate effectively – Being able to communicate with everyone from the mail clerk to the CEO is essential. And when it comes to your immediate supervisor, it is imperative to have excellent communication skills. If you are given a project and it may cut into your other work, say so. Ask what the time frame for delivery is and explain that you want to give the project your best and ask for help for the best way to get that accomplished. Accepting the project and then running past the deadline is a lot worse than being upfront about your time constraints.

3. Ask how you are doing – If you do not have regular performance reviews, ask for one. Explain that you are long overdue for one and would like feedback on your job performance. This shows that you want to do better and improve on some things as well as gently point out unobtrusively that perhaps the “boss” hasn’t validated everyone’s work enough. The review is a great time to also communicate your overall career goals in the company and ask advice of the supervisor on your next steps.

4. State your opinions – Share your opinions on matters that are discussed in the office, especially when asked. Feel secure in including a dissenting opinion but realize that not everyone will agree. Positive changes and progress do not occur when everyone agrees with one another, not wanting to rock the boat. In addition, respect other people’s opinions and do not belittle them.

5. Dress for Success – Always look “put together,” even when it may be casual Fridays. Looking successful translates into being successful. This will project a quick positive first impression and you will be looked upon favorably.

There are quite a few things that make for a better employee and the five above factors are just a few of them. Use your common sense and avoid office politics and you should shine in your job.
